BMI is the number everyone reaches for first, and it's the number people love to argue about. So which is it — a useful health check or a meaningless relic? The honest answer is "both, depending on how you use it." BMI is a decent screening tool for groups and a blunt instrument for individuals. This guide explains exactly what it gets right, where it falls down, and which numbers give you a clearer view of your body composition.
What BMI actually measures
Your BMI is simply your weight divided by your height squared. That's it. It says nothing about how much of your weight is muscle, fat, bone, or water — only how heavy you are for your height. The World Health Organization category bands (under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, 30+ obese) were chosen because, across large populations, they track reasonably well with the risk of weight-related disease.
That population-level usefulness is real. For a public-health researcher looking at millions of people, BMI is cheap, consistent, and predictive enough. The trouble starts when you take a tool built for crowds and apply it to one specific person — you.
Where BMI gets it wrong
Because BMI can't see what your weight is made of, it has predictable blind spots:
- It reads muscle as "overweight." Muscle is denser than fat. A lean, well-trained athlete can post a BMI of 28 while carrying single-digit body fat. By BMI alone they're "overweight"; by any sensible measure they're not.
- It can miss hidden fat. The flip side: someone with low muscle and a "healthy" BMI can still carry unhealthy levels of fat — sometimes called "normal weight obesity."
- It ignores where fat sits. Fat around the organs (visceral fat) is far riskier than fat on the hips and thighs, but BMI treats every pound the same.
- It's less accurate for some groups. Older adults lose muscle and gain fat at the same BMI; people of South Asian descent face raised risk at lower BMI thresholds; and it doesn't apply to children or pregnancy.
Better numbers to track
No single measurement tells the whole story, but a few used together beat BMI comfortably.
Body fat percentage

So should you ignore BMI?
No — just use it for what it is. BMI is a fine first glance: free, instant, and good enough to flag when a closer look is warranted. The mistake is treating it as the final word. The smarter routine is to start with BMI, then layer on body fat percentage and a waist measurement to understand what's actually going on. If you're muscular, lean on body composition over BMI. If your BMI is high and your waist-to-height ratio is over 0.5 and your body fat is elevated, that's a consistent signal worth acting on.
And remember the things no calculator captures: how you move, your blood pressure and blood sugar, your energy, your strength, and your sleep. The numbers are a map, not the territory.
