Understanding Your Metabolism: BMR, TDEE and What They Mean

"Metabolism" gets blamed for a lot — the friend who eats anything and stays lean, the stubborn pounds that won't shift. But the word describes something concrete and largely predictable: the total energy your body spends to keep you alive and moving. Once you understand its parts, you can stop guessing and start eating a number that fits your body. This guide explains the two figures that matter most, BMR and TDEE, and what genuinely changes how much you burn.
What metabolism actually is
Your metabolism is the sum of every energy-using process in your body: pumping blood, breathing, repairing cells, digesting food, thinking, fidgeting, and exercising. We measure all of it in calories. On any given day your total burn breaks down into four parts:
- Basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the energy to keep you alive at complete rest. This is the biggest slice, usually 60–70% of the total.
- The thermic effect of food — the energy spent digesting and processing what you eat, around 10%.
- Exercise activity — deliberate training: runs, lifts, classes.
- Non-exercise activity (NEAT) — everything else you move for: walking, chores, fidgeting, standing. This varies enormously between people and explains a lot of "fast metabolism" mystery.
BMR: your body at idle
Your BMR is what you'd burn lying still in bed all day, doing nothing. It's the floor of your energy needs. Most calculators — ours included — estimate it with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, which uses your age, sex, height and weight. It's an estimate of a population average, so treat it as a well-educated starting point rather than a measurement of you specifically.
Why does BMR differ between people? Mostly body size and composition. A bigger body has more tissue to maintain, so it burns more at rest. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, which is part of why strength training and a higher lean body mass nudge your resting burn up over time. Age and sex play smaller roles, largely because they track with muscle mass and body size.
TDEE: the number you actually use
BMR is useful, but you don't spend your day in bed. Your TDEE — total daily energy expenditure — is your BMR scaled up to account for how active you are. It's the real answer to "how many calories do I burn in a day," and therefore the number you build a diet around.
TDEE is usually calculated by multiplying BMR by an activity factor, from roughly 1.2 for a sedentary desk job up to 1.7+ for people with hard physical jobs or heavy training. The honest catch: most people overestimate their activity level. A few gym sessions a week does not make someone "very active" if the other twenty-three hours of each day are spent sitting. When in doubt, pick the lower factor — you can always adjust up if the scale isn't moving as expected.
The "fast metabolism" myth
It's tempting to believe some people are blessed with a furnace and others cursed with a slow burn. Real medical causes of a slow metabolism — an underactive thyroid, for example — exist, but they're far less common than they're blamed. When researchers actually measure people, the differences in BMR between similar-sized individuals are surprisingly small.
What looks like a fast metabolism is usually one of two things: a bigger or more muscular body that simply needs more fuel, or a much higher NEAT — the naturally restless person who paces on calls, takes the stairs, and rarely sits still can burn hundreds of extra calories a day without "exercising." The good news is that the lever you control most is the same one: move more across the whole day, and build muscle so your engine idles a little higher.
Does metabolism slow when you diet?
Somewhat, yes — and it's normal, not sabotage. As you lose weight there's simply less of you to maintain, so your BMR drops. Your body also tends to trim NEAT a little when calories are low, so you unconsciously move less. This is why weight loss slows over time and why it helps to recalculate your TDEE every 10–15 lb and adjust your target. It is not a reason to despair; it's a predictable adjustment you make as you go.
